Using AI Agents @EdgeRed: Badminton Edition
At EdgeRed, we’re always exploring how AI can make work (and life) easier—not just for clients, but within our own team. So when it came time to organise a friendly game of badminton, we thought: why not put an AI agent in charge?
Meet Our Event Assistant AI
Planning a social event might seem simple, but there’s often a surprising amount of back and forth: collecting expressions of interest, confirming attendance, sharing logistics, calculating payments, and summarising the final agenda.
To streamline all that, we built a custom AI event assistant, tailored to help us organise our internal EdgeRed badminton sessions. It’s a lightweight agent designed to handle the admin, so we can focus on the fun.
What It Does
Our AI assistant automates the end-to-end planning flow:
- Sends out an EOI form via Google Chat
- Collects responses through a centralised web app
- Calculates payments based on attendance and booking costs
- Summarises the agenda, including time, place, and who’s attending
How It Works
The assistant lives in a shared Google Chat Space and responds to slash commands on the fly, like:
- /details – Posts the agenda and shares the current sign-up link
- /who – Lists the current attendees and their RSVP statuses
- /pay – Shares individual cost breakdowns
All responses are instant, neatly formatted, and visible to the group—making it easier to coordinate with zero manual chasing.
Built by Dan
The agent was created in-house by one of our senior data analysts, Daniel, who coded it as a lightweight bot integrated with Google Chat and Google Sheets. It’s a great example of how a bit of smart automation can go a long way in solving everyday inefficiencies.

What’s Next?
We’re already looking at ways to extend its capabilities, like:
- Updating RSVP status via commands (e.g. /attending yes)
- Sending automatic reminders
- Generating post-event summaries and feedback forms
While this started as a fun experiment, it’s also a glimpse into how AI agents can support team collaboration in subtle but impactful ways.
